Amador City is the smallest incorporated city in California. The town was built in 1848 due to the finding of gold in the creek. Gold quartz was found in nearby gullies as well. Lots of folks flocked here. Gold fever.

In 1851, the Keystone mine was established to mine the gold bearing quartz. The mine operated until 1919. The mine produced over $24 million worth of gold. The deepest mine shaft is nearly 2700 feet deep. Amazing!

The remnants of the East shaftsโ€™ brick wall stands today. The structures are more like a ruin and not preserved. You can view the structures from the walking path. There structures are all within 100 feet, so it doesnโ€™t take too long to view. The path is connected to the gravel car lot right on Amador Cityโ€™s Main Street just on the southern end of the town.

Located just slightly south of the center of Amador City, this mine was once one of the most productive gold reserves in the Mother Lode. It is closed to the public but you can get nice views from the public parking lot. What remains of foundations of old mining buildings and rails. They dug far and deep, motivates by their ambition and in the darkness of this 2700โ€™ mine they awoke something.
