Terrible experience. The owner, Kevin, doesn't answer the phone, doesn't return calls, and makes promises he doesn't keep. We placed our bike on consignment with Kevin, and he said it should sell in about 2 weeks. That sounded perfect. But after a month with no updates, we went to the store to see what was going on, and Kevin said that yes, he sold the bike. Great! But why didn't he call tontell us ? Well, no, it wasn't so great. It was like pulling teeth to get our portion of the money for the bike. After 5 missed appointments by Kevin, locked doors during business hours, and excuse after excuse, Kevin did finally show up with a check 3 weeks later than promised. The entire process was a fiasco, and then Kevin took it even further and poured salt on the wound by insulting me when I politely tried to explain my frustrations. For these reasons, I strongly do not recommend Kevin or Hangtown Cyclery.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Hangtown Cyclery, and I must say, the experience exceeded my expectations. Kevin, one of the staff members (owner?), played a pivotal role in making my visit memorable.

From the moment I walked in, Kevin's friendly demeanor and genuine passion for cycling were evident. He took the time to listen to my cycling needs and provided expert guidance on parts needed for my son's bike. Kevin's knowledge of the products and his willingness to share insights showcased a level of customer service that is truly commendable.

The wide range of quality products and the store's organized layout made my shopping experience enjoyable.

In conclusion, Hangtown Cyclery, with Kevin at the forefront, provides a stellar customer experience. I highly recommend this establishment to both seasoned cyclists and those new to the sport. Kevin's expertise and friendly attitude make Hangtown Cyclery a standout choice for all your cycling needs.

I've used Hangtown Cyclery several times and always had excellent service. A couple of times Kevin has fixed something for free that I thought would be a major expense. For example, my bicycle seat post is spring-loaded and has a lever to release the tension so I can adjust the height while I'm riding. It got to where it wouldn't hold my weight, kept getting lower during the ride, and I thought it would require a spring replacement. Kevin fixed it by adjusting the nut on the end of the cable, no charge.
Recently I needed to replace the original tires and Kevin walked me through selecting the right tires based on my riding preferences (onroad/offroad percentages, etc); the new tires are much better for my type of riding.
Several other instances, but in general, the work has always been done on or before when he said it would be, always a fair price, and always a good job.

Hangtown Cyclery has terrible customer service, is dishonest, and the owner uses cheap products that raise serious concerns.

I brought in my front wheel that needed sealant refreshed because it was due. I removed the tire myself and was unable to get it re-installed because I do not have a compressor and I was in a rush. I brought in the wheel and the guy replaced my Stan’s Tubeless Rim Tape with Guerilla Tape (not a cycling product and not designed for high pressure Tubeless). In addition, when he returned the wheel to me, it had a wobble or bubble in the tire first ride out. He defensively said it wasn’t him (I never accused him, this could have been me), but if I am paying you, how does a bike shop not inspect the quality of their work before returning to the customer?

Ultimately I ended up needing to visit another bike shop down the hill who informed me the rim had been re-taped incorrectly and would not hold air. The other shop replaced the tire with a new one, showed me it wouldn’t hold air, and then quickly replaced the rim tape with the correct tape for my wheel, charged me less, and had it back to me faster. The issues was resolved in one visit.

After giving this guy the benefit of the doubt multiple times, he instead argued with me that Guerilla tape can be used for bikes (I know I worked in many bike shops) but it’s not suitable for high pressure tubeless.

In addition, even if it could, my tire would not hold air, and the service I paid for was never delivered. He refused a refund, didn’t offer even a partial, store credit, or any solution for a follow up, he just wanted to argue. This shop has lost a customer for life over $30 and for not using suitable bike products. He rudely showed me the door and I am glad that’s the last time I will have to walk through it and have such a terrible experience.

As someone who has been recovering after their hospital visit from a very bad crash on this bike, I put my trust in this "mechanic" to give me reliable and dependable service to make my bike safe to ride. I was let down.

I have never missed the friendly, professional, and self-accountable, atmosphere of Placerville Bike Shop more in my life.

New to town ...
1st time in I was just visiting & I need a mounting screw ... wasn’t sure of the size - Kevin gave me two ... offered to pay - no way ... asked to come back again!
Moved here a couple weeks ago. I came back as my sister had purchased me a pump as a gift ... a few PSI short of what I needed. Kevin exchanged it without a receipt ... and stated he owned me money for a refund ... didn’t remember I still owned him - told him I’d be back for a tube as the movers gave me a flat ...
Great service ....
Great integrity ...
I’ll be back !

OLD FASHIONED FRIENDLY SERVICE STILL EXISTS! I came into Hangtown Cyclery for the first time to get a simple flat fixed on my way to Mammoth Lakes and Bishop for the July 4th, 2020 weekend. I received a level of service that I could only describe as exceptional: Enthusiastic owner Kevin and energetic sidekick Dustin repaired my flat promptly, unexpectedly weighed my bike (out of curiosity) and recommended a tubeless tire conversion while extolling its myriad benefits.

One upgrade led to another, and I now have a very dialed-in Specialized Epic mountain bike! I brought my wife's old Trek mountain bike for a tune-up and shock overhaul and she is also a delighted customer!

BOTTOM LINE: Kevin and Dustin are passionate cyclists first and foremost and clearly display and share their expertise through supportive advice and recommendations on bike repair, maintenance, and upgrade as if my bike were their own. They both provide that old-fashioned small local bike shop level of service that you will not find anywhere else!

Fast, friendly and inexpensive
I brought in a flat wheel from an old garden cart. They had the correct tube size in stock and within 5 minutes, I had a new tube and a surprisingly reasonable bill. They were very friendly and happy to take care of my problem. Great place. Highly recommended.
