This is one of those "if you know, you know" wineries in the Napa Valley area. I am a huge fan of winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, and a friend at Mending Wall set up a private tasting for me. 810 Foothill is a lovely, casual tasting room that is a collective of boutique wine brands all crafted by TRB. There are different tastings for each of his brands (Matthew Wallace Wines, Caterwaul, Post Parade, Aston Estate and Lyrix), and you must make an appointment with different wine advisors in order to taste the wines. I was able to taste the Caterwaul Wines portfolio the day I visited.

We had the undivided attention of our wine advisor, Eric, for an entire two hour visit. Eric quickly took note when we rolled our eyes as he started talking about the high professional wine scores and after mentioning it once, never uttered a score again. I'm a very slow taster, and I never felt rushed here at all.

The setting and pacing of the tasting was more than appropriate. The tasting room is modern yet comfortable, sort of a formal-ish yet rustic barn with soaring ceilings and pretty views. We were seated inside, but there was a lovely outdoor patio that I am sure is coveted by visitors to the collective.

The wines speak for themselves, and I was surprised at just how tasty the Caterwaul line is. It was fun to try different vintages and vineyards with the ability to compare. The Caterwaul wines ranged in price from $50 - $175, and we tried a couple of other wines with higher price tags, some from the Matthew Wallace portfolio of wines including a delicious white and the other, a Lyrix ($275).

Fans of TRB know his palate and know his style, so these wines were big, bold, delicious Cabernets with gorgeous and bright fruit. If you love his style of wines, you're going to love this tasting.

Note that this isn't a wine tasting I'd recommend for newbies to the wine world. The wines are quite expensive, a decent-sized purchase is quietly expected, and this isn't the type of tasting room that is big on hand holding. If you make your way here, it means you know what you are doing. It's not a snotty place to visit, but we observed quite a few "know it all" wine snobs enjoying tastings. If you're new to the Valley and tastings in general, I would start at some of the more mainstream wineries (we've all been there)!

I tried the entire Caterwaul portfolio in addition to a couple of "bonus" wines, and all were fabulous. I'm so excited to come back and make appointments to try all of the other TRB creations. So many wines, so little time!
